Yay for nerd power!
A good way to get a one up on the money situation: hold a high school graduation party and have your parents invite all of their co-workers and every single reletive you can think of ranging from the immediate family like uncles and aunts all the way to the obscure ones of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cousins type. Most don't show up but feel obligated to send you money anyways. A lot of people from mine sent me gift cards to Pearl Art Store, so I was set for cash for food (and comics) and the basic art supplies for the first half of the school year. Graduation parties are the biggest scams out there today, and I love 'em (I only love 'em when it is my party though).
And in response to "Hey, can I borrow your paintbrush?": A LOT of that goes around, especially with paints and brushes. At least in the basic foundation classes anyways. Oh man, I've been taken back to fuzzy memories of my color theory class. "Oh shit! I ran out of my small seven dollar tube of candium yellow guache! Will (my roommate), you are color blind, you won't know the difference! Give me yours!" Haha, yeah, art college RULES!
HUZZAH FOR NERD POWER! As my home-boy Jebus once said, "The geek shall inherit the earth."
